Un western sympathique
L'acteur Michael Landon de la série Bonanza est crédible dans le rôle titre.
Le réalisateur Ted Post dont ce n'est que le second long métrage restera connu pour les épisodes de Rawhide et Pendez les hauts et court 1968 avec Clint Eastwood.
Le film trouve son inspiration de la chanson Tom Dooley enregistrée par le Kingston Trio en 1958, elle-même inspirée d'un fait divers réel (l'assassinat de Laura Foster par Tom Dula en 1865).
La chanson apporte beaucoup au film (que ce soit lors du générique et lors de transitions entre scènes).
Une bonne série B.
