Avis : Western passionnant.
Les deux points forts sont d'une part, le duo William Holden - Eleanor Parker qui donne lieu à une première partie dénuée d'action mais savoureuse et qui permet d'approfondir le personnage de William Holden. Eleanor Parker, star de la MGM (après Scaramouche) est d'une beauté étonnante dans ce film. Le rôle (l'un de ses meilleurs) lui rend justice. On pourrait tout de même reprocher à son rôle de freiner l'action.
D'autre part, la seconde partie est plus riche en action et en rebondissements avec un final mémorable.
Le jeu des acteurs est excellent à commencer par Holden qui maîtrise son rôle.
John Forsythe, William Campbell et William Demarest interprètent avec succès les seconds rôles.
John Sturges en était son deuxième western, peu avant des sommets comme Règlement de comptes à OK Corral. A noter que le réalisateur reprendra le thème de l'évasion de prison dans La Grande Evasion, 10 ans après.

An exiting western.
The two strengths are, firstly, the duo William Holden - Eleanor Parker which lead the first part of the film whith few action, but tasty and allowing us to examine the character of William Holden. Eleanor Parker, an MGM star (after Scaramouche) is a stunning beauty in this film. The role (one of her best) does her justice. One could still criticize the role to curb the action.
The second part is more action-packed with a memorable final.
The acting is excellent starting with Holden who masters his role. John Forsythe, William Campbell and William Demarest play successfully supporting roles.
John Sturges was making his second western, just before the peaks with Gunfight at the O.K. Corral. Note that the director would eventually use the theme of prison break in The Great Escape, 10 years later.
A solid western.
